Gov Hogan: Just let us fix our stuff

It's getting harder and more expensive for consumers to fix our products. We are calling on the Maryland legislature to remove barriers to repair -- such as companies denying access to parts and service information to limit consumer repair choices.

I'm writing to ask you to support SB412/HB84, Right to Repair.

It's getting harder and more expensive to get our electronics, like cell phones and computers, fixed. Many manufacturers have set up barriers that limit the ability of consumers and third-party repair shops to access the parts, service information, tools and diagnostic software they need to make repairs. Car manufacturers did the same thing until legislators stepped in to enable independent repair.

Repair restrictions limit customer choice, it also forces us to pay such high prices for repair that it becomes uneconomical so we buy new stuff. It’s bad for our pocketbooks and our local, sustainable companies because it shifts money from a local repair economy to multi-state companies and overseas manufacturers.

We think there's a better solution for our broken gadgets: Right to Repair. That's why we're calling for protections that guarantee access to the components and information needed to fix the things we own. Will you join us in supporting  SB412/HB84?
