Please support the Student Voter Empowerment Act (HB245/SB647) to help Maryland college students register and vote.

Youth voter participation in Maryland is low, but research shows that once students register to vote they turn out at levels similar to older adults.

The Student Voter Empowerment Act, sponsored by Del. Luedtke and Sen. Lam, ensures that all large undergraduate universities in Maryland have polling locations on campus and that public universities take basic steps to increase participation.

As new voters, young people often struggle to navigate the voter registration system, or forget to update their registration when they move from home to a college campus. Low youth voter turnout has serious consequences for the future of our democracy. Numerous studies have shown that voting is habit-forming, and young people who vote are more likely to become life-long voters.

As part of a robust civic education, universities should ensure their students are registered to vote. Policies like the Student Voter Empowerment Act, are a good start. I hope you will support it.
