Baltimore City Council: Support the Fair Elections Fund!

In November Baltimore City voters voted overwhelming to pass Question H, an Amendment to the City Charter to establish the Fair Election Fund.

Now, the City Council needs to act to finalize the program.

With the Fair Elections Fund we can

Help get big money out of Baltimore elections. Participating candidates cannot take giant checks from lobbyists, corporations, or PACs.
Give everyone a voice so all Baltimoreans, regardless of race, gender, or income have equal opportunity to participate in elections.
Expand opportunities to run for office so people from all backgrounds can run on the strength of their ideas, not access to money.
Encourage more participation in our elections by providing limited matching funds for small campaign contributions.

Thank you for supporting the City Charter Amendment to establish the Fair Election Fund and Commission.

In recent years we have seen the voices of Baltimore families drowned out by a flood of big money, and elected officials forced to be increasingly dependent on large and corporate donors. For example, in the last Baltimore election, the average donation to all mayoral candidates rose from $542 to $725, both of which is more than an entire week’s paycheck for most Baltimoreans.

In November, Baltimore City voted overwhelmingly to establish the Fair Election Fund, directing the City Council to establish a new program to strengthen our democracy.

We're counting on you to finalize the program to expand opportunities to run for office, encourage participation in City elections, reduce the role of large and corporate donors, and lead the state and country in fixing our broken campaign finance system.

Please make sure your move quickly to finalize a program that will:

1. Only be available to candidates who reject large donations and donations from corporations and PACs. 
2. Encourage candidates to fundraise from City residents by providing limited matching funds for small donations from County residents.
3. Establish an independent commission to make funding and policy recommendations to the Council.
