Empower Student and Military Voters

Students and military members face unnecessary barriers when registering to vote and turning out to cast their ballot. We’re calling on the Maryland legislature to help increase civic participation by eliminating some of these barriers.

Please support the Student and Military Voter Empowerment Act (HB156/SB283) to help increase civic participation by removing barriers to student and military voter registration and participation.

The bill, sponsored by Del. Luedtke and Sen. Elfreth, will allow military members to register to vote online and provides students with the resources they need to participate in elections.

Youth voter participation in Maryland is low, but research shows that once students register to vote they turn out at levels similar to older people.

As new voters, young people often struggle to navigate the voter registration system, or forget to update their registration when they move from home to a college campus. Low youth voter turnout has serious consequences for the future of our democracy. Numerous studies have shown that voting is habit-forming, and people who vote are more likely to become life-long voters.

As part of a robust civic education, universities should ensure their students are registered to vote. Policies like the Voter Empowerment Act are a good start. I hope you will support it.
